- Contrary to popular belief some Americans really do appreciate the beauty of the game and enjoy playing the worlds most popular sport. Although the MLS isn't an extremely popular league here in the states, they still earn television time. There is also a much larger contingency of EPL fans here than you may suspect, because a lot of us doe appreciate football played at it's best quality. And believe me, I wish it was called football here instead of soccer.
- Americans have been playing soccer for a long time; it's just that it's only now beginning to get worldwide attention. In fact, soccer is, and has been for some time, the single largest participation sport in the US. But the sport's current popularity is based on a lot of things. First, it is a relatively easy sport to participate in. Equipment costs are relatively limited. Traditional US sports such as football and baseball require a ton of specialized equipment that can run well into the hundreds of dollars. Compare that to a $10 ball and a $20 pair of shoes. Of US sports, only basketball comes close on that score. Second, and this is important - girls can play just as easily as boys. Moreover, at the older levels, the so-called Title IX comes into play here, which requires educational establishments (and college sports is HUGE in the US) to offer an equal amount of sports opportunites to both sexes. Since a college football team can have 75 players or more, manay of them on scholarships, this opens all sorts of doors for women. Hence the success of the US women's soccer team. Third, it's relatively safe. Some Brits may think football is rugby for sissies because of all the padding, but I've played both and football is every bit as dangerous. Fourth, Americans are simply sports crazy. Fifth, I think Americans like the idea of a sport where they can truly compete on a global scale. True, there are world championships in baseball and basketball, and there's always hockey at the Olympic level, but none of these get the same global attention as soccer. And don't forget that the US has been playing in the World Cup longer than anybody except Belgium, France and Mexico (winning against Belgium in one of the two first matches EVER played in that tournament). Sixth, there is indeed a growing Hispanic presence in the US, as well as a large number of expatriate Europeans, who now have much greater ability to stay in touch with their traditional sport back home than has historically been the case (satellite tv, internet, etc.). The MLS is consciously marketing itself to the Hispanic market (and the NFL is trying to hit back at the same market). As for football being played in Britain, I played the game there myself for several years back in the 80s. Its popularity has waned since then, although there is still a vibrant amateur league, and it is still strong in several European countries, especially Germany. Also, the NFL will be playing a regular season game at Wembley later this month to a sell-out crowd.
- BECAUSE THEY THINK THEY CAN DOMINATE EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD.but this is one sport these boring retards will never ever win a world cup in .at least not in my lifetime. they suck.coby jones????? alexi lalas????.i root for any country other than the us. they are pathetic.darfur could beat the us.if they had the same training facilities.
- actually, the US has been playing soccer since the late 1800s, even before gridiron. So soccer indeed came before gridiron in the states but it become a matter of which code became the mainsteam. "Why hve america got into soccer? Why wud they play british soccer when they hve american football cus in britian we dont play american football here the only thing similar is rugby." this is a really dmb question. But the answr is simply- because we can. You have to remember that Britain doesnt own the game of soccer; Brazil does.
- it is not just "british soccer" football is a world sport, that anyone anywhere can play and watch. why do you care?
